First Visit At River City Orthodontics

What Happens at My First Visit?

At your first visit to River City Orthodontics, we complete a full clinical exam to understand your smile and determine the best path forward. This includes a review of your medical and dental history, an evaluation of your teeth and bite, and an estimate of your treatment time and fees.

Diagnostic records are then taken to help us create a personalized plan. These typically include facial and dental photos, digital imaging, and 3D models if needed. These records not only guide your treatment but also help us track your progress over time.

How Are My Treatment Options and Costs Explained?

After reviewing your diagnostic records, the doctor discusses your treatment in detail, including the recommended approach and costs associated with your case. The cost of treatment varies depending on complexity, appliances required, and the length of treatment. Before beginning, we review fees and payment options so there are no surprises.

We offer:

  • Interest-free payment plans
  • Discounts for payment in full
  • Multi-family member discounts
  • Assistance with most insurance plans, including filing paperwork for you

Your treatment fee includes:

  • Records and digital imaging
  • All appliances
  • All orthodontic visits, including emergencies
  • One set of retainers
  • Retainer check-up visits for six months after appliances are removed

What Should I Expect at Regular Appointments?

The appointment to place your appliances (braces, expanders, etc.) typically takes one to two hours. After that, you’ll visit us every 4–8 weeks for adjustments, which usually take 20–40 minutes. Our office is open Monday through Friday from 8:00 AM to 5:00 PM, and patients are seen by appointment only.

We make every effort to stay on schedule and ask that you notify us as soon as possible if you need to reschedule so we can find a convenient time close to your original appointment.

For patients with insurance, we will help you understand your benefits and assist in filing claims. While insurance companies reimburse patients directly, our team works closely with you to make the process as smooth as possible.

How Long Will My First Visit Take?

Your initial appointment is efficient and typically lasts:

  • 45–60 minutes for your exam and photos
  • A few additional minutes to review treatment options and next steps

Can Parents or Family Members Join the Visit?

  • Asking questions and feeling confident moving forward

Frequently Asked Questions

We know your first orthodontic visit can come with a lot of curiosity, and we’re here to make everything feel simple and stress-free. Below are some common questions patients in the Glen Allen area ask as they prepare for their first appointment at River City Orthodontics.

Do I need a referral to see an orthodontist?

No referral is needed. You can schedule a consultation with us at any time, whether you were sent by your dentist or simply want to explore orthodontic treatment on your own.

The American Association of Orthodontists recommends a first visit around age seven. This early check doesn’t usually mean treatment will start right away, it simply gives us a chance to monitor growth and catch developing concerns before they become bigger issues.

Absolutely. Many adults choose orthodontic treatment for both cosmetic and functional reasons. With options like clear aligners and modern low-profile braces, treatment is more comfortable and discreet than ever, making it a great choice at any age.

Most first visits focus on evaluation and planning, not starting appliances. In some cases, treatment can begin the same day if diagnostic records have already been taken and a plan has been approved. If same-day treatment is something you’re hoping for, just let our team know in advance so we can try to accommodate you.

It’s completely normal to feel a little anxious. Our team takes time to explain each step, answer your questions, and help you feel at ease from the moment you walk in. We’re here to make your experience positive, supportive, and tailored to your comfort.
