Meet Orthodontist Dr.Boyd Sr.
Education & Specialty Training
Dr. Richard Boyd received his undergraduate degree cum laude from the University of South Carolina in 1978. He went on to earn his Doctor of Dental Medicine (D.M.D.) degree with honors from the Medical University of South Carolina. To complete his specialty training, he obtained both a Master’s degree and a certificate in orthodontics from the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill.
40 Years of Orthodontic Practice
In 1984, Dr. Boyd established his orthodontic practice in Columbia, South Carolina, where he cared for patients for 40 years. After selling his practice, he and his wife, Stacy, relocated to Charleston, South Carolina. They have three children—Ali, Mallory, and Reb—and four beloved grandchildren.
Teaching & Academic Leadership
Dr. Boyd currently serves as an Assistant Clinical Professor of Orthodontics at the Medical University of South Carolina, where he teaches residents in clear aligner therapy (Invisalign®) and practice management. He has also taught at the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill, the Medical College of Georgia, Tufts University, and the graduate dental residency program at Richland Memorial Hospital.
Author, Lecturer & Professional Recognition
An accomplished educator and author, Dr. Boyd has published multiple works on orthodontics and directed numerous courses on orthodontic techniques across the United States, Europe, Australia, Africa, and Canada. He has been a frequent guest lecturer for the American Association of Orthodontists and has earned recognition as one of The Best Dentists in America—an honor awarded by his peers in dentistry.
Current Practice & Life Outside Orthodontics
In addition to his academic and clinical contributions, Dr. Boyd co-founded Boyd Harris Advisors with his daughter, Mallory, and practices alongside his son, Reb, in Glen Allen, Virginia. Outside of orthodontics, he enjoys restoring old boats, fishing, and spending time with his grandchildren.
